FOOTNOTE

8. Ray number is a particularly useful character in Silphium not only because it is an evolutionarily conservative trait but also because only the ray flowers have functional pistils. As a result, the ray number can easily be determined well after some or all of the rays have fallen, by counting the ovaries or achenes in a head, as long as none of the achenes have yet been lost.
